Tech Talent IMPACT! Talks:  New Ideas and Disruptive Thinking Tackling the Technical Talent Challenge
Fast paced,IMPACT! Talksfeature three compelling speakers sharing powerful ideas in the space of 60 minutes. These brief high impact talks are designed to disrupt ordinary thinking and inspire you to reimagine what is possible.

Moderator: Daniel Reynolds – CEO, Talon Professional Services

"She'll be Ready. Will you?"

Speakers:

  • Sandy Marshall - Founder/CEO, Project Scientist

Diversity of thought drives innovation. Achieving gender equality is important for workplaces not only because it is the right thing to do, but because it is fundamental to our nation’s economic performance. Organizations such as Project Scientist are preparing a powerful new generation of young women to be STEM leaders. Are you positioned to attract and retain the next generation of female STEM innovators?

The Journey of the Athlete
Speaker:

  • Ryan Drummond - VP of Employer Partnerships, Game Plan

The scarcity of tech talent has pushed the concept of hiring for skills and potential rather than just educational background or degree to the forefront. There’s no doubt that athletes possess highly desirable workplace skills, honed on and off the field, like critical thinking and strong communication. But with all that time spent training and competing, it is challenging to reach and recruit them when they are ready to transition to the workforce.

Ryan Drummond, VP of Employer Partnerships at Game Plan, focuses on life after athletics for about 150,000 athletes and works with employers who want to establish a talent pipeline from college and professional athletics. In this session, Ryan will share his personal story to illustrate the mutual value both companies and athletes receive when they engage with one another.

Minus The Illusion
Speaker:

  • Torin Ellis – Corporate Diversity Strategist

Minus The Illusion is a mashup of all things corporate from EEOC statements and press releases to employee engagement and vanity metrics that some refer to as people analytics.  Truth is far too many have fallen short and this comes back to leadership.  This conversation is about high expectations and trust - neither of which are nebulous.  Minus The Illusion is the one talk that will change your relationship with power.

Breakout Sessions: What Matters to CIOs & Technology Staffing Firms

These breakout sessions address important issues of both IT leaders and tech staffing executives. Smaller by design, these educational sessions allow an opportunity to engage in candid conversations and to connect with speakers and attendees in both communities.

Breakout 1: Combating Candidate and Credentials Fraud in Tech Hiring

Moderator: Mike Hammond - Attorney, HMN - Hammond Neal Moore

Panelists:

  • Karen Moore – Senior Vice President, Veremark

  • Sean Slater - VP, Client Service and Delivery, Brixton Group

  • Matthew Ripaldi, CEO, Talent Group

With IT talent in short supply and the explosion of remote work, the incidence of candidate and credentials fraud has increased dramatically.  From exaggerated credentials and candidate impersonation to a hostile state actor intent on cyber intrusion and IP theft, the consequences range from the merely disruptive to the catastrophic.

During this session, the panel will outline the scope of a problem that plagues both internal IT organizations and technology staffing firms alike. The discussion will then turn to successful strategies being employed to combat candidate fraud including new technologies that hold the promise of leveling the playing field with those intent on deception.

Breakout 2: Transcending the Transactional Relationship: Cultivating Partnerships

Moderator: Mark Taylor – CEO, Society for Information Management (SIM)

Panelists:

  • Mark Griesbaum - Managing Partner, at Affinity4U, LLC

  • Eugene Holtzman – CEO, Mitchel Martin Inc.

  • Surej KP – President, Intelliswift Software, Inc.

  • Lance Ralls - Chief Technology Officer ThreeSicty Group

A good supplier meets a client’s needs with good service in a cost-effective manner.  But what does it take to transcend being merely a good supplier to becoming a truly valued partner?  What qualities and behaviors are sought by clients? Similarly, what can clients do to enable their staffing firms to be more effective and deliver greater value?  In this candid conversation, IT leaders and staffing firm executives will explore what each party can do to move beyond transactional relationships to cultivate true partnerships.

Breakout 3: The Role of DEI and ESG in Recruiting

Moderator: Dan Fellows – CEO, Get-Optimal

Panelists:

  • Bertina Ceccarelli - CEO, NPower
  • Torin Ellis – Diversity Strategist
  • Marina Perla – CEO, Mojo Trek
  • Caren Shiozaki  - CIO Fortium Partners

While a discussion of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and Environment, Social & Governance (ESG) are part of most corporate mission statements, what it means in practice varies widely.  From how compliance and progress within IT organizations and among their suppliers are measured, to the relative emphasis of DEI and ESG among other corporate priorities, expectations can often be murky and sometimes lack measurable accountability.

In this candid discussion, we will hear from both IT leaders and staffing firm executives on how they have engaged on these issues internally and within the context of the client-supplier relationship.  Going beyond catchphrases, the panel will explore the expectations by various stakeholders, including their workforce, to adopt socially conscious policies and practices. The session will also delve into the potential impact of DEI and ESG policies on the pool of qualified candidates in the face of the perennial shortage of technical talent.

Breakout 4: Introducing the Most In-demand IT & Engineering Job Skills for 2023: Building a Pipeline to Meet Today's Talent Need

Presenter: Peter Velikin – CMO, CEIPAL

Today’s talent shortage spans every industry, but it has hit the technology and engineering sectors especially hard. This shortage, particularly in the tech industries, is better understood as a skills shortage, rather than just lack of candidates, resulting from rapid digital transformation in the wake of a pandemic, which has changed the way we work. So, what are these highly desirable skills that employers are searching for in the Engineering and IT industries and which are the most in-demand skills for 2023? CEIPAL, an AI-powered total talent acquisition platform, analyzed data from over 10,000 candidates to answer that question. In this session, learn the top skills, most coveted job roles, and hottest locations, as well as the latest salary information and other hiring insights to ensure your recruiting efforts lead to more successful placements in the year ahead.

Breakout Sessions for Technology Staffing Firms
Breakout sessions include topics that span, but are not limited to, the following themes:

  • Succeeding in a Work-from-Anywhere-Sell-to-Anywhere-World
  • Building and Retaining a High Performing Internal Team
  • The Importance of Leadership and Culture
  • The Staffing Firm Tech Stack

Breakout 1:  Selling in a Remote Work World – Superpowers Activate: Leverage Vulnerability, Authenticity, and Curiosity to Build and Enhance Your Relationships

(Succeeding in a Work-from-Anywhere-Sell-to-Anywhere-World)

Presenters:

  • Casey Jacox – Sales & Executive Leadership Coach & Author, Winning the Relationship
  • Megan McCann – CE0 & Founder, McCann Partners

As the pandemic fades into the background, there is no question that it has left a lasting impression on how staffing firms operate. Although some sales organizations struggled to sell when prospect/client lunches and office visits were put on hold, the remote work environment has opened new possibilities. While the last several years have been a favorable development for many firms, from reducing staffing firms’ real estate footprint and expenses to enabling expansion into markets without a “brick and mortar” presence – as with any adverse condition (e.g., Y2K, the Dot.com crash, the 2008 crisis, and COVID-19) – the right mindset and vision will fuel success.

In this interactive session, the panel will share powerful stories of resiliency powered by vulnerability, authenticity, and curiosity and explore the strategies to ensure continued success in a remote and hybrid work environment.

Breakout 2: Building an Internal Training Program for AEs & Recruiters: It’s Not Just for Large Firms

(Building and Retaining a High Performing Internal Team)

Moderator: Tim Glennie - Managing Partner & Founder, BridgeView

Panelists:

  • Alison Daley – Founder, Recruiting Innovation
  • Amanda Marciniak – Director of Learning & Development, SSi People
  • Tori Young – Managing Director, CRi

No technology staffing firm can scale without growing its internal team of AEs and recruiters. With lateral hiring rarely delivering the expected ROI, what are the alternatives?  Answer: Train and develop your own pipeline of AEs and Recruiters.

While almost all larger tech staffing firms have robust training programs to grow their team, how can smaller firms implement a strategy for training and developing AEs and recruiters? With the dearth of tech recruiters and staffing firms hiring from outside the industry, how do you go about training new recruiters, as well as current recruiters, to talk the tech talk and cultivate authentic relationships with candidates and clients.  In this session, staffing firm executives will share their insights and lessons learned on how to source, identify, train, and develop AEs and recruiters.

Breakout 3: Building a High Performing Team

(Building and Retaining a High Performing Internal Team)

Moderator: Sue Thaden - President/CEO, CRi | From Now On

  • Jeb Corley - Vice President: Information Technology, MEDIX
  • Noel Wolf – Managing Partner, Collinwood Technology Partners

In an industry where intellectual property does not play a significant role, the ability to build and scale a high performing team is central to driving enterprise value.  In this panel discussion, you will hear from technology staffing firm executives who have successfully built teams. Where are you finding them? How are you onboarding them? How are you retaining them? Compensating them?

Breakout 4: Supercharging Growth Through Digital Transformation: The Convergence of Operations,                            Marketing, and Technology
                        (The Staffing Firm Tech Stack)

Moderator: Julie Haldorson – Executive Vice President, Parqa

  • Lauren Jones - Founder, Leap Consulting

  • Lindsey Ruth – Global Head of Marketing, LHH

  • Kate Rutherford - VP of Talent Technology, Advanced Group

  • Lydia Wilson - Executive Vice President, Strategy & Development. DISYS

In many, if not most technology staffing firms, decisions related to operations, marketing and technology are made in silos.  However, some firms are leveraging the power of a holistic approach and digital transformation to supercharge growth and improve client and candidate experiences.  In this panel discussion, hear from staffing firm executive and technology and digital marketing experts how to employ new technologies that create greater operational efficiency while more effectively targeting your marketing message to the right audience to accelerate growth.

Breakout Sessions for Technology Staffing Firms

Breakout 1: Legal and Tax Compliance in a Work-from-Anywhere-World

 (Succeeding in a Work-from-Anywhere-Sell-to-Anywhere-World)

Moderator: Bobby Brown - Chief Executive & Legal Officer, Carlton National Resources

Panelists:

  • Martin L. Borosko - Managing Member, Becker
  • Jerry Grady - Partner & National Staffing Industry Practice Leader, UHY
  • Mike Hammond - Attorney, HMN - Hammond Neal Moore
  • Bill Josey - Attorney, William S. Josey, LLC

Even before the great geographic dispersion of internal employees and consultants triggered by the pandemic, staffing firms had consultants working in multiple states. While a few staffing firms have been rigorously compliant, many others have placed consultants in dozens of states without giving any thought to the legal or tax implications. This session will bring together employment and immigration attorneys and tax experts who will provide an update on some of the key legal and tax developments and offer practical advice on how to reasonably balance the burden of federal and state compliance obligations with the corresponding risks.

Breakout 2: WBC Survey – Pay Equity in Staffing

(Building and Retaining a High Performing Internal Team)

Speaker: Kip Wright - Executive Chairman and CEO, Genuent and TekPartners are becoming INSPYR Solutions

Workforce diversity is key to the success of any organization. The staffing industry plays a unique role in the evolution of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion by enabling its clients to find and employ a more diverse workforce. But the industry must also reflect the very same diverse profiles that it promotes. The first Gender Diversity and Equity Within the Staffing and Recruitment Industry report was released two years ago. In this session, Kip Wright will present the findings of the newly released second industry benchmark survey and measure the progress over the last two years. He will share survey results on topics including:

  • Diversity within employees and leadership

  • Remote Work Opportunities

  • Job Enrichment and the pursuit of meaningful work

  • Attraction and Retention of Employees

Breakout 3: Successful Leadership in a Hybrid and Remote Work World

(The Importance of Leadership and Culture)

Moderator: Tom Nunn – President, Tom Nunn Consulting

Panelists:

  • John Bemis – President, Benchmark IT
  • Andrew Jackson – President, BravoTech
  • Sarah Martin – President, Dale Workforce Solutions

This panel discussion will explore how company leaders adapted to the dramatic changes in the work environment wrought by the pandemic. What does leadership look like when you are not in the same office? What does mentoring look like? How do you develop future leaders when those high potential employees are five states away? The panelists share their experiences and lessons learned on leadership in this new normal.

Breakout 4: Creating and Maintaining an Extraordinary Culture in a Work from Home World

(The Importance of Leadership and Culture)

Moderator: Monica Dominic - Chief Client Officer, PSI

  • Manny Vidal - Executive Vice President Strategy and Development, SSI People
  • Jen Waldrip - Vice President, ProFocus Inc.

While hybrid and remote work has many advantages, including lowering costs and helping team members achieve a better work-life balance, the paradigm shift comes with drawbacks as well.  How do you create and maintain a strong company culture when so much of your team’s interaction is through a computer screen?  What replaces the traditional bonding achieved through casual daily interactions, impromptu happy hours, and regular birthday celebrations? In this panel discussion, hear what other staffing executives have done to maintain a strong and differentiated company culture in the WFH world.

Breakout Sessions for Technology Staffing Firms

Breakout 1: Recruiting on a Nationwide Basis: The Opportunities and the Challenges

 (Succeeding in a Work-from-Anywhere-Sell-to-Anywhere-World)

Moderator: Vikki Whitefoot - Director of Recruiting-Consulting Services, LRS Consulting

Panelists:

  • Barb Bruno – President, Good as Gold Training
  • Brian Clark - Director, Solutions and Client Engagement, STAND 8 Technology Services

  • Charlie Fossell - Chief Operations Officer & Partner, TriCom Technical Services

While in the past almost all consultants worked on client premises and were expected to commute, the pandemic changed everything.  As many clients have continued to allow their internal employees flexibility on how and where to work, that flexibility has in many (but not all) cases been extended to consultants.  Where roles are fully remote, this has allowed the search for candidates to expand from exclusively locally focused to national in scope.  In this session, the panel will explore both the challenges and opportunities presented by recruiting on a nationwide basis.  Hear how some staffing firms have successfully implemented a nationwide recruiting strategy.

Breakout 2: Building a High Performing Team

(Building and Retaining a High Performing Internal Team)

Moderator: Sue Thaden - President/CEO, CRi | From Now On

Panelists:

  • Jeb Corley - Vice President: Information Technology, MEDIX

  • Noel Wolf – Managing Partner, Collinwood Technology Partners

In an industry where intellectual property does not play a significant role, the ability to build and scale a high performing team is central to driving enterprise value.  In this panel discussion, you will hear from technology staffing firm executives who have successfully built teams. Where are you finding them? How are you onboarding them? How are you retaining them? Compensating them?

Breakout 2: The Power of Possible

  (The Staffing Firm Tech Stack)

Speakers: Kevin Flower, Enterprise Sales and Chris Kendrick, CEO of Mercury

Most staffing technology has evolved to support and replicate working practices of the past. As competition intensifies and candidates and clients demand better service, staffing firms must make radical changes to succeed.

In this breakout session, Mercury will demonstrate a series of automations, business applications and workflows that empower the goal-oriented business to transform staffing.

We will leverage MS Teams, Power Automate, Customer Voice, and other parts of the Microsoft Power Platform to show how technology can transform how you work.  This is NOT a demo of Mercury.  This is the Power of the Possible.

Breakout 3: New Innovations in the D&I Hiring Space - Leader-led Inclusive Behaviors

(Building and Retaining a High Performing Internal Team)

Speaker: James Mahoney - Chief Operating Officer, Rangam Consultants Inc.

Now more than ever, companies are prioritizing diversity, equity & inclusion strategically and tactically. However, implementing practical and practicable guidelines that help not only increase broader representation but also extend beyond hiring (development, career progression, etc.) is where many companies struggle. New innovations in the D&I hiring space are not only influencing employers and society at large, but also helping businesses rethink their D&I strategies, processes, and goals.
